Call White House about Iraq |
Telephone Bush about war
[1-4-03]
We've received two notes from Witherspooners urging
people to call the White House to give their views on the war with Iraq.
The first note:
I understand that the president has put out a
request for feedback about war with Iraq; if you'd like to register
your opinion, here's how. It's easy, and may count for something:
President Bush's White House Opinion Line:
202-456-1111 Please make a call if you have a minute.
The Bush White House has an "opinion" line
for you to call. The line only accepts calls from 9-5 EST., Monday
through Friday. Just call the White House at 202-456-1111. A machine
will detain you for only a moment and then a pleasant live operator
will thank you for saying "I oppose" or "I
approve." It will only take minutes. Note that the weekends are
closed for calls. The president has said that he wants to know what the
American people are thinking. Let him know. Time is running out. Then
please forward this e-mail to at least five people right away.
Tell them what you think:
1 PHONE CALL EQUALS 10-20 PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T CALL,
PLEASE PASS ON TO FRIENDS
Arch Taylor of Louisville adds this:
Friends:
I'm sure at least some of you are familiar with the White House direct
phone line. I've used it myself before and did so again after
receiving this message. Apparently folks up there really do want to
hear from the public, so it's important that as many as possible let
the President know we oppose
war on Iraq.
I stated several reasons, including:
 | concern for the Iraqis, |
 | unsettling the region, |
 | increasing US deficit, |
 | and increasing the deficit in the national
budget. |
The person I talked to thanked me and said she would
relay my message. I got the message just before 4 pm on Friday and
called right away.
I had to wait a while, but got through. The line is
closed after 5 pm Friday till 8 am Monday.
Please try it.
Arch

GA actions
ratified (or not) by the presbyteries
A number of the most important actions of the 219th
General Assembly have now been acted upon by the presbyteries,
confirming most of them as amendments to the PC(USA) Book of Order.
We provided resources to help inform the
reflection and debate, along with updates on the voting.
Our three areas of primary interest have been:
 |
Amendment 10-A,
which removes the current ban on
lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender persons being considered as
possible candidates for ordination as elder or ministers.
Approved! |
 |
Amendment 10-2,
which would add the Belhar Confession to our Book of
Confessions. Disapproved, because as an amendment
to the Book of Confessions it needed a 2/3 vote, and did not
receive that. |
 |
Amendment
10-1, which adopts the new Form of Government
that was approved by the Assembly. Approved. |
