Earth Sunday 2004 |
| Prayer for air: April 25 is
Earth Day Sunday by Evan Silverstein,
Presbyterian News
Service
LOUISVILLE - April 20, 2004 - Presbyterian
congregations across the nation will join other Christians this weekend in
giving thanks for the wonders of creation on Earth Day Sunday.
Congregations will mark April 25 - the
Sunday closest to Earth Day (April 22) - with worship experiences,
educational programs and other activities emphasizing environmental
stewardship.
"It's an opportunity to reflect on the gift
of God's creation and what we need to do to protect it," said the Rev. Bill
Somplatsky-Jarman, associate for the PC(USA)'s Environmental Justice Office.
This year's Earth Day theme focuses on air
quality. The National Council of Churches (NCC) has compiled a resource
highlighting ways for individuals and congregations to celebrate and protect
this integral part of God's creation.
The resource - "Life-Giving Breath of God:
Protecting the Sacred Gift of Air" - includes basic information on air
quality, a sermon starter, and ideas for personal, congregational and
community action. Go to
http://www.webofcreation.org/ncc/. Click on "Link here. Earth Day
2004 Materials."
"I hope that Earth Day for individual
Presbyterians and congregations goes beyond just a single day or even a
single Sunday worship experience," said Rebecca Barnes-Davies, coordinator
of Presbyterians for Restoring Creation. "I hope that it becomes
incorporated into people's individual discipleship as well as corporate
discipleship."
Additional information and a free
downloadable copy of the 2004 Earth Day Sunday resource are available online
at the Environmental Justice Office's Web site,

GA actions
ratified (or not) by the presbyteries
A number of the most important actions of the 219th
General Assembly have now been acted upon by the presbyteries,
confirming most of them as amendments to the PC(USA) Book of Order.
We provided resources to help inform the
reflection and debate, along with updates on the voting.
Our three areas of primary interest have been:
 |
Amendment 10-A,
which removes the current ban on
lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender persons being considered as
possible candidates for ordination as elder or ministers.
Approved! |
 |
Amendment 10-2,
which would add the Belhar Confession to our Book of
Confessions. Disapproved, because as an amendment
to the Book of Confessions it needed a 2/3 vote, and did not
receive that. |
 |
Amendment
10-1, which adopts the new Form of Government
that was approved by the Assembly. Approved. |

After fifteen years of scholarship

voices of feminist theologians of all stripes: scholars, clergy,
students, exiles, missionaries, workers, thinkers, artists, lovers
and devotees, from many parts of the world, all children of the God
in whose image women are made. .... This blog seeks to glorify God
through prayer, work, art, and intellectual reflection. Through
articles and ensuing discussion we hope to become an active and
