Jan
Hus Presbyterian Church
Part-Time Stated Supply Pastor
Position
[posted here 12-4-02]
Our progressive Presbyterian Church, located on
Manhattan's Upper East Side, is looking for a Stated Supply Pastor to
serve our congregation while we prepare for and implement our search for
a full time permanent Pastor. Responsibilities will include supporting
congregational care, evangelism, community-building within the
congregation, and some pastoral care. Some preaching, participation in
worship-planning, and some teaching in bible study will also be
involved. Jan Hus has an active committee structure that provides
support for all of these activities. The Stated Supply Pastor will also
moderate session meetings.
Jan Hus Presbyterian Church is known nationally for
its long-standing witness for peace and justice. This witness has
included the nuclear freeze movement, the sanctuary movement and related
questions concerning US involvement in Central America, previous and
potential military action in the Persian Gulf, and the creation of
advocacy networks concerning housing and homelessness in New York City
and concerning US policies in Haiti. Jan Hus is a More Light church and
actively endorses full inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgender people in all ordained positions and offices within the
Presbyterian Church. Jan Hus also embraces feminist perspectives and
inclusive language. As we say in our mission statement, we are an
experiment that brings together the intimacy of a small church with the
ministry of a larger church. Jan Hus was recently ranked among the most
effective Protestant congregations by the Lilly Endowment.
We are looking for a Stated Supply Pastor who will
join our experiment and support us, and help us support each other, as
we move through a time of transition. We are especially interested in
candidates who have experience serving in interim situations, although
it is not a requirement. The position is for 16 hours per week. A
competitive salary will be offered.

| Recent
seminary graduate seeks call in a progressive congregation [6-27-02]
Jay Wallace has graduated this year from San Francisco Theological
Seminary, and has been certified as ready to receive a call. He
describes himself as "a people person [who] would rather be
visiting with folks than taking care of administrative details."
He adds: "I'm interested in folks who want to
reach out to their neighbors. This means they want to discover their
gifts of ministry, so they may be effective practitioners of the good
news in the everyday world. My gifts are nurturing and enabling gifts.
My hope is help grow a church community that welcomes, accepts, and
values people. I believe these kinds of attitudes encourage
relationships which are 'good news,' and relational evangelism is like
the aroma of baking bread, Who can resist? With the gifts of prayer and
teaching I wait to help each seeker to find Gods' direction for ministry
and be empowered for Gods' purposes in that ministry."
Of his recent history he says: "From a year's
chaplaincy, where I developed counseling, visitation and hospitality
skills I was called to seminary. Here I concentrated on biblical
studies, counseling, and currently on encouraging evangelism in
congregations. For two summers I directed the community life program for
the Doctor of Ministry curriculum. I ministered to pastors representing
12 countries and 20 Christian traditions. This involved solving
practical problems: recruiting typists, arranging transportation,
helping 3rd world pastors navigate the food shopping system, organizing
group tours, hosting community coffees/ weekly suppers, publishing a
weekly newspaper and providing various ecumenical worship
experiences."
His PIF is # 100005932.1 @ Church Leadership
