Toward peace in Israel/Palestine
A continuing conversation |
| Received 3/2/2005
To whom it may concern:
I have no reason to question Arch Taylor's reporting on the "Steps Toward
Peace in Israel and Palestine" Conference. However, if his observations are
accurate, I'm at a loss to fathom subsection 3, Interfaith Dynamics.
This suggests a nauseating view of people. It is implied that
Presbyterians debate (on issues), while Jews react emotionally. It blatantly
says, "Jews express emotionally loaded opinions" and suggests sensitivity to
these emotions while trying to redirect conversations. Such blanket
statements are patently offensive. It also suggests that people who disagree
(both Jews and Presbyterians) with the PC(USA)'s position on Palestine and
Israel simply don't understand the position. Again, this suggestion is
untrue.
I don't know what to make of Sara [sic] Lisherness's comments which imply that
Christians are not controlled by our animal passions, while non-Christians,
who do not have the gift of discernment operate from the reptilian portions
of their brains.
I am a theological conservative. I also opposed the divestment action.
People with these credentials are generally regarded by most progressives as
narrow-minded. Yet it would never enter my imaginiation to describe the
differences between Christians and non-Christians in this dehumanizing,
appalling manner.
I, for one, would appreciate it if you would clarify whether this is
indeed an accurate representation of the conference presentation.
Thank you,
Will Spotts
