Torture Announces a Youtube Video Contest,
AND
We need your help
to generate $10,000 in prize money for a Youtube video contest about
ending torture
[2-21-08]
We live in an era of constant
media. The images and depictions of life we absorb shape us and
inform our understanding of the world. In a time when it is becoming
increasingly common for the media to portray torture as morally
acceptable and even a tool of the protagonists in our television
dramas, it is important that we reach as wide an audience as
possible with our prophetic message that torture is always wrong
regardless of circumstances. For this reason we intend to engage the
internet community and hopefully captivate the imagination of a
broad spectrum of our society with a Youtube Video Contest.
Starting April 1st we
will begin soliciting submissions on the popular site Youtube, of 60
second videos that address from a No 2 Torture perspective the
question, "What's the big deal about torture?" We will collect these
submissions to be judged by a panel of prominent activists in the
Anti-Torture movement. The ten best videos will be awarded $1,000
prizes. The money for these cash awards must come from you, our No 2
Torture supporters. All of these videos will then become the
property of No 2 Torture to be used in future information campaigns
online and on television to continue conscience raising in this
nation. We have already been given a $1,000 matching gift and $300
towards the match!
These kinds of contests have become
a popular aspect of Web 2.0 culture. User generated content is
reaching such prominence in our society that commercials run during
the Super Bowl have even been generated using this method. It is an
inexpensive and effective way to mobilize an extraordinarily large
and creative body of media savvy individuals around a cause. This
will not only benefit No 2 Torture by the production of the videos,
but will in effect serve to raise awareness on its own, and to
engage the minds and passions of people who might otherwise remain
apathetic to the issue of torture.
To accomplish this we will need
your help. We will need $10,000 in prize money and an additional
$1-3,000 for operating costs. Even more than financial support we
could use creative individuals with media or video skills, along
with assistance in spreading the word. The more buzz we can generate
for this event the more of a success it will be. Word of mouth is a
powerful tool on the internet!

contest" in the subject line.

consider helping with this exciting venture.

GA actions
ratified (or not) by the presbyteries
A number of the most important actions of the 219th
General Assembly have now been acted upon by the presbyteries,
confirming most of them as amendments to the PC(USA) Book of Order.
We provided resources to help inform the
reflection and debate, along with updates on the voting.
Our three areas of primary interest have been:
 |
Amendment 10-A,
which removes the current ban on
lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender persons being considered as
possible candidates for ordination as elder or ministers.
Approved! |
 |
Amendment 10-2,
which would add the Belhar Confession to our Book of
Confessions. Disapproved, because as an amendment
to the Book of Confessions it needed a 2/3 vote, and did not
receive that. |
 |
Amendment
10-1, which adopts the new Form of Government
that was approved by the Assembly. Approved. |
