events at GA, and missed the deadline for ordering them from the
Office of the General Assembly, Witherspoon officer Ray Kersting will be
glad to help you out.
Contact him by Monday, June 10 at the latest, and
he'll take care of your needs. Well, not all of them, but the need for
Witherspoon tickets. And that's no small thing!
E-mail to sfkerst@rt66.com
Or phone (505)982-4548.
Of course, tickets for some events may still be on
sale at the Assembly, starting on Friday, June 14. |
| The
Rev. Bobbie McGarey, of Duncan, OK, just sent this "little thought
about GA." We're happy to share it here. [6-4-02]
Ambassadors for Christ
we have this Word
this Word who is God
and we'd keep it close, behind walls.
but the Word will get out
and we can go too
but we'll have to be brave to follow.
because THE WORD is not chained --it Cannot be held
nor can it be tied up by anyONE
Because the WORD will get out
even from death on a cross and go where the WORD needs
to be
we can't HOLD the WORD we're to sing/set it free
The Ambassador of God IS the WORD
and our joy is to share
and the joy will increase
when we carry the Word everywhere. |
| Peace
issues coming to this Assembly
The Presbyterian Peace Fellowship has issued a paper
listing the issues it will be focusing on at the 214th General
Assembly.[5-29-02]
The issues include:
 | a proposal for a study of religion and violence |
 | encouragement for Holy Land tours to include
Palestinian perspectives |
 | Land Mines |
 | Department of Peace |
 | Taco Bell Boycott |
 | A resolution on the challenges to global security:
Threats to the International System Controlling Arms and Their
Development |
|
What
may be the major issues coming to this Assembly, and how are
they related to one another? Witherspoon Issues Analyst Gene
TeSelle offers information and comments. [5-22-02]
Who's
manipulating the General Assembly? [5-27-02]
Dr. Harold A. Franch of Atlanta responded to
TeSelle's essay with observations about what he views as
inappropriate efforts to influence decision-making in favor of
more open ordination policies and other more progressive
positions - both in his presbytery and (by national staff) in
General Assemblies.
TeSelle
offers a brief response to these concerns - and we invite
you to share your own observations and suggestions. Please
just send a note!
Check out the further
conversation growing out of Dr. Franch's comments. [5-29-02]

| An
opportunity to remember the whole story [5-27-02]
We recently received a thoughtful comment
about references to Christopher Columbus in relation to the coming
General Assembly, which will gather in the Ohio city that bears his
name. The writer is concerned about what these references will
communicate to "some of the people we are trying to include in our
Presbyterian family: Native Americans."
The writer is responding to an
April report by Presbyterian News Service on communication plans for
the Assembly. |

Candidates
for Moderator respond to Witherspoon questions
[5-14-02]
One of the first acts of the 214th General Assembly will be the election
of a new Moderator. To help our readers weigh this important choice, the
Witherspoon Society has asked each of the four candidates to respond
briefly to four questions that reflect Witherspoon concerns -- and, we
believe, concerns of the wider church. |
"Top
Ten Issues" for the 214th General Assembly
[4-12-02]
Stated Clerk Clifton Kirkpatrick has responded to a
number of requests to issue his listing of issues coming to this year's

involved in the litigation currently blossoming, related to G-6.0106b.

recently expressed by Frank Baldwin, Stated Clerk of the Presbytery of

GA actions
ratified (or not) by the presbyteries
A number of the most important actions of the 219th
General Assembly have now been acted upon by the presbyteries,
confirming most of them as amendments to the PC(USA) Book of Order.
We provided resources to help inform the
reflection and debate, along with updates on the voting.
Our three areas of primary interest have been:
 |
Amendment 10-A,
which removes the current ban on
lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender persons being considered as
possible candidates for ordination as elder or ministers.
Approved! |
 |
Amendment 10-2,
which would add the Belhar Confession to our Book of
Confessions. Disapproved, because as an amendment
to the Book of Confessions it needed a 2/3 vote, and did not
receive that. |
 |
Amendment
10-1, which adopts the new Form of Government
that was approved by the Assembly. Approved. |
