More Light groups
worship with joy
by Mitch Trigger
[6-11-01]
There are many wonderful celebrations of worship at each year's General
Assembly, but few can match the joy that was shown at the worship
service held Sunday afternoon at Central Presbyterian Church in
Louisville. Central Presbyterian Church, a More Light congregation and
the recipient of the Whole
Gospel Congregation Award at this year's Witherspoon Society
luncheon, hosted the service that was a cooperative effort by More Light
Presbyterians, The Shower of Stoles Project, and That All May Freely
Serve.
The
sanctuary was filled with a crowd of worshipers as diverse as the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) itself: different ethnic groups, women,
men, seniors, youth, children, married couples, partners, and singles
all rejoiced in song and prayer for God's amazing and inclusive love. A
door took center place in the front of the sanctuary as a symbol of the
"Gate of Righteousness." The reference was to Psalm 118:19-20,
a portion of the psalm used as the basis for the sermon by Johanna Bos,
Dora Pierce Professor of Bible and Professor of Old Testament at
Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
"Open for me the gates of righteousness
I will enter them and praise the Holy One.
This is the gate of the Holy God;
the righteous will enter it."
The
people present were not the only examples of diversity in worship. Organ
music by Bach and Mathias, African-American spirituals, traditional hymn
tunes, and a haunting solo accompanied on guitar accented the worship
service. The climax of the service was a rousing congregational
rendition of "We are Marching in The Light of God" as
worshipers clapped and danced in the aisles, passing one-by-one through
the symbolic door. It was a symbolic act that this group of worshipers
hoped would become a reality in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
