| Message to the Group of Eight:
"Drop the Debt"
[4-19-01]
Religion News Service reports that "Drop the Debt" will be a
faith-based message to the meeting of the Group of Eight industrialized
nations in Genoa, Italy, in July.
While G-8 leaders
say they and their institutions have forgiven enough debt -- up to
one-half of that owed to them by 22 hard-pressed countries - critics say
the true figure is slightly less than one-third.
"But it's just not enough, just not commensurate with the scale of
human suffering in those countries," according to Henry Northover
of the London-based Catholic relief agency CAFOD. He adds that even
after those 22 countries get all of the debt relief coming to them, they
will still be spending more in monthly debt payments than they spend on
health care or education, on average.
