Volunteer Award to Harold Barton |
| Harold Barton - A Volunteer for All
Seasons
[7-1-02]
The Rev. Ogden White, pastor of Bethany Presbyterian
Church in Cleveland, OH, shared with us this very nice detailing of
how much Harold Barton has been and done outside of his service to the
Witherspoon Society.
Harold Barton, this year's recipient of The Witherspoon Society's Volunteer of the Year
Award, has been a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Cleveland,
Ohio for over 50 years. He has served many terms on Session, and was the
church's Treasurer for 26 years. Harold plans the menus, does the
shopping, coordinates volunteers, directs the cooking and recycles
nearly everything from the church's Community Meals program which serves
a free meal to approximately 110 persons at the church on the 1st,
2nd, 4th, and 5th Fridays of each month
year around.
During his time at Bethany Harold has also served on
at least three Pastoral Nominating Committees. Every Sunday morning
Harold picks up three women in their eighties and drives them to church
and then home again.
In the Greater Cleveland community Harold is on the
Board of the Greater Cleveland Volgograd Oblots Association, is a
founding member of The One World Shoppe (now, Ten Thousand Villages),
and is a Board Member of NPC Housing, Inc.
Harold has been active in the larger church as well.
He has been a Commissioner from the Presbytery of the Western Reserve to
the General Assembly. He volunteers once a week at the Presbytery
office. He is currently serving on the Committee on Ministry. At the
Synod level, Harold has participated in six Inter-cross-cultural Events
leading groups to Nicaragua, Mexico, El Salvador, and Guatemala. For
many years he was an active member of the Synod's Hispanic Caucus
helping Bethany's Hispanic Outreach.
Harold has traveled to Cuba, the Middle East, and
Russia and participated in conferences at Stony Point, Montreat and
Ghost Ranch.
Congratulations to Harold Barton, a 15-year member of
the Witherspoon Society, and our Treasurer for the past two years. |

GA actions
ratified (or not) by the presbyteries
A number of the most important actions of the 219th
General Assembly have now been acted upon by the presbyteries,
confirming most of them as amendments to the PC(USA) Book of Order.
We provided resources to help inform the
reflection and debate, along with updates on the voting.
Our three areas of primary interest have been:
 |
Amendment 10-A,
which removes the current ban on
lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender persons being considered as
possible candidates for ordination as elder or ministers.
Approved! |
 |
Amendment 10-2,
which would add the Belhar Confession to our Book of
Confessions. Disapproved, because as an amendment
to the Book of Confessions it needed a 2/3 vote, and did not
receive that. |
 |
Amendment
10-1, which adopts the new Form of Government
that was approved by the Assembly. Approved. |

Heather Reichgott, who has created
this new blog for Voices of Sophia, introduces it:
After fifteen years of scholarship
and activism, Voices of Sophia presents a blog. Here, we present the
voices of feminist theologians of all stripes: scholars, clergy,
students, exiles, missionaries, workers, thinkers, artists, lovers
and devotees, from many parts of the world, all children of the God
in whose image women are made. .... This blog seeks to glorify God
through prayer, work, art, and intellectual reflection. Through
articles and ensuing discussion we hope to become an active and
thoughtful community. |
