| How the Coalition wants to test
candidates for pastorates |
| It has been clear for some time that the
conservative wing of the Presbyterian Church, especially as represented
in the Presbyterian Coalition, has seen the theological examination of
candidates for ordination - and their examination by pastor nominating
committees - as a crucial way to assert more control of the ministries
of our churches and our denomination.
The web site of the Coalition offers one glimpse into
this approach.
The Rev. George T. Hobson, pastor of First
Church in George, Iowa, presents a list of questions to press in
examining candidates for their congregations.
He assures his readers that "it is not our
purpose to dictate to you what kind of theology is
right for your pulpit," but he does warn that candidates might not
really believe the things they're supposed to believe.
Some of the suggested questions (each accompanied with
a little suggestion of right answers):
 | How do you feel about people who claim to be born
again? |
 | What actually happened to Jesus of Nazareth on
Easter morning? |
 | Tell us about your doctrine of the Atonement. |
 | How would you respond to someone who claims that
Jesus is our Lord, but is not Lord of all? |
 | What does the Bible teach about sexual morality,
and in what way (if any) do you consider its teachings still binding
on us today? |

and devotees, from many parts of the world, all children of the God
in whose image women are made. .... This blog seeks to glorify God
through prayer, work, art, and intellectual reflection. Through
