"Chicken hawks" for war |
| "Chicken
hawks" support the war
[9-18-02]
Robert Parham, the executive director of the Baptist
Center for Ethics, considers some of the loudest voices calling for war
against Iraq. He reports on some of the leading supporters of the war,
and their own personal record of staying out of military service.
It's an impressive list, including Vice President
Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, deputy secretary of defense, and Richard Perle,
head of the Pentagon''s Defense Policy Board. Also Speaker of the House
Dennis Hastert, Majority Whip Tom Delay, Senate Minority Leader Trent
Lott, Senate Minority Whip Don Nickles, Senator Phil Graham and Attorney
General John Ashcroft, as well as White House politicos Andrew Card and
Karl Rove. All these war advocates passed up military service.
There also media
folks like Bill Kristol, Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh.
He also notes that
many with military experience are questioning the proposed war. One of
them is Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., a recipient of two Purple Hearts and a
Bronze Star for service in Vietnam. Hagel said, "Many of those who
want to rush this country into war and think it would be so quick and
easy don't know anything about war," according to Newsweek.
"They come at it from an intellectual perspective versus having sat
in jungles or foxholes and watched their friends get their heads blown
off," Hagel said. "I try to speak for those ghosts of the past
a little bit."
Parham acknowledges that issues of personal "character" (to
use the word favored by George Bush II) are not immediately relevant to
questions of politics and policy. Nevertheless, he argues that there are
moral questions of personal integrity at stake when one who has
carefully avoided military service - and the real-life experience it can
provide - is so quick to support military action by others.

New Hampshire Gazette for a long chart listing supporters of
the war, and their avoidance of personal participation in the past.

they're worth the effort.
