| We invite comments on Lew Daly's analysis of the 2000
General Assembly. Here's the first one.
Feel free to add your own! |

I would like to comment on two aspects of Lew Daly's
analysis of the Presbyterian renewal movement:
First, he says things such as "...the growing
emphasis on theology and the Bible should not be underestimated in the
long term." [Click
here to see the context.]
This is considered to be bad? If this is a bad thing
to you, then just what sort of institution do you consider a Christian
church to be?
Second, he says things such as "Clearly seeds are
being planted to increasingly reframe the wedge issues--ordination,
abortion, feminism, etc.--as matters of biblical and confessional
authority alone. This marks a convergence with the tactics of the
right-wing takeover of the SBC." [Click
for the context.]
The Witherspoon Society and the IDS have been
insisting that the motives of evangelicals are political. We have
responded that they are not political; they are theological. So you say
that our saying that they are theological is a political tactic.
In other words, there is nothing evangelicals can say
or do that would convince you that we are not politically motivated. You
have decided ahead of time that it is so.
This is classical prejudice. You are so prejudiced
against us that you will not listen to us. Your minds are closed.
I have wondered how you can live with yourselves when
you print attack pieces such as Lanham's, full of unfounded unkind
assumptions about your fellow Christians. I suppose that you are able to
do this because you are so prejudiced that you do not even recognize it.
With sorrow,
Deborah Milam Berkley
Member, First Pres. of Bellevue (WA)
P. S. Did Lew Daly ever even interview any of the
renewal group leaders when he was writing A Moment to Decide and
analyzing GA? Or did he just decide what their motives were without
spending time in conversation with them?
And you may post my letter if you wish.
