Legal advice on ordination |
| Lawyers explain ways ordination of gay
and lesbian persons can be sustained in church courts
[11-19-02]
Presbyterian
Outlook
reports on advice given by attorneys Peter Oddleifson and Doug Nave
during the Covenant Network conference, for congregations that support
the ordination of glbt elders and ministers. They may well be upheld in
the church's judicial commissions, said the lawyers, if they simply
exercise their authority to examine and ordain candidates. Congregations
and presbyteries which openly state their intention to "defy"
the ban on ordination imposed by G-6.0106b may be in a less defensible
position, said Nave and Oddleifson.
Your WebWeaver heard them assert more specifically
that this is the reason why the Covenant Network is providing legal
assistance for those involved in ordination cases - but only for those
that do not involve acts of overt "defiance."
