James Emerson named interim president of San Francisco Seminary

by Jerry L. Van Marter, PNS

30-August-2000

The Board of Trustees of San Francisco Theological Seminary (SFTS) has announced its appointment of the Rev. James G. Emerson Jr. as interim president, effective Sept. 1.

Emerson, a graduate of Stanford University and Princeton Theological Seminary, has been actively involved in the life of SFTS over the years. He has been a member of the boards of trustees of both the seminary and the Graduate Theological Union in nearby Berkeley, Calif. He and his wife, Margaret, have co-chaired the Advisory Board for the Lloyd Center Pastoral Counseling Service at the seminary.

After he retired as pastor of Calvary Presbyterian Church in San Francisco in 1990, the Emersons served as volunteers in mission for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), preaching and teaching in Taiwan, India, China, Korea and the United States. In 1995 they served as visiting professors of mission and evangelism at SFTS.

Emerson assumes the presidency in the wake of a sexual misconduct scandal that cost former SFTS president the Rev. Don McCullough his job in May.

Voices of Sophia blog

Heather Reichgott, who has created this new blog for Voices of Sophia, introduces it:

After fifteen years of scholarship and activism, Voices of Sophia presents a blog. Here, we present the voices of feminist theologians of all stripes: scholars, clergy, students, exiles, missionaries, workers, thinkers, artists, lovers and devotees, from many parts of the world, all children of the God in whose image women are made. .... This blog seeks to glorify God through prayer, work, art, and intellectual reflection. Through articles and ensuing discussion we hope to become an active and thoughtful community.
