Iraq Peace Pledge |
| Iraq Peace Pledge is gathering support
[9-10-02]
The Campaign of Conscience is seeking signatures
for a "Peace Pledge" of people and groups committed to
opposing the impending war against Iraq. As of 9-10-02, they have
12,240 signatures. Would you like to add yours? Read on ....
The statement reads:
| The Bush Administration is
planning major military action against Iraq. Since 1990, the US
has led a devastating economic and air assault on that country,
harming the people of Iraq instead of its purported target,
Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. This war has contributed to the
deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. The Bush
Administration rationalizes escalation of the war against Iraq
as the next step in its "war on terrorism." We oppose
war on Iraq and call for resolution of the crisis through
international diplomacy.
WE JOIN IN THIS PLEDGE TO BUILD A PRO-ACTIVE
NONVIOLENT MOVEMENT FOR A PEACEFUL, JUST GLOBAL COMMUNITY.
I support peace for Iraq. I grant permission
to use my name and city publicly as an opponent of the ongoing
economic and bombing war on Iraq, and of any escalation of that
war. |
Concerned citizens are also invited to sign on to a further "Iraq
Pledge of Resistance," which reads:
| If the United States sends combat
troops, invades by proxy, or otherwise significantly escalates
its intervention in Iraq, I
pledge to join with others to engage in acts of nonviolent civil
disobedience at U.S. Federal facilities,
Congressional offices, military installations, or other
appropriate places. I pledge to engage in nonviolent civil
disobedience in order to prevent or halt the death and
destruction such U.S. military action causes the people of Iraq. |
To sign the pledge(s) on the Web, or for more information, go
to their web site.
There you'll also find printer-ready versions of the
pledge, sign-up sheets, and more - in PDF format.
Sponsors of the Campaign of Conscience
include American Friends Service Committee, Education for Peace in Iraq
Center, Fellowship of Reconciliation, Lutheran Peace Fellowship,
National Network to End the War Against Iraq, Pax Christi USA, Peace
Action, and Voices in the Wilderness.
