San Gabriel Presbytery endorses Jack
Rogers as Moderator of the 213th General Assembly
1-10-01
a report from Kent Winters-Hazelton, pastor of
Claremont Presbyterian Church, Claremont, CA
By a resounding voice vote the Presbytery of San
Gabriel endorsed the Reverend Dr. Jack Rogers as a candidate for
Moderator of the 2001 General Assembly.
Dr. Rogers, who recently retired as Vice President of
San Francisco Theological Seminary's Southern California Campus, has
been a member of San Gabriel Presbytery for 29 years. This was the first
time he was elected to represent San Gabriel as a minister
commissioner.
In a question and answer time prior to the election of
commissioners, Rogers was clear in stating his opposition to Amendments
O and B. His objection arise from the fact that the church has made
something mandatory in G-6.0102b that is not essential to our faith. The
Heidelberg Catechism, he noted, requires chastity within marriage. That
makes it difficult now to claim the confessions support chastity outside
of marriage.
When asked how he could assist in bringing a sense of
unity to the PC(USA) he said, "The Word of God is not bound. If we
read the Bible together, we can be changed."
San Gabriel Presbytery is a conservative body, and
Roger's election was by no means certain. At the November meeting of the
Presbytery his endorsement as Moderator was defeated on a procedural
maneuver. The momentary setback was by 8 votes.
