New PBS documentary, "In the Light of Reverence," will
focus on Native American struggles to protect landscapes of spiritual
significance.
The Presbyterian Washington Office has sent this
alert on 7/25/01. Posted here on 7-27-01.
"In the Light of
Reverence"
The Television Race Initiative is thrilled to let you know about the
upcoming PBS broadcast of In the Light of Reverence. This award-winning
documentary premieres on the acclaimed PBS series of independent films,
P.O.V., on August 14, 2001 at 10:00PM (check your local listings). We
have found it exceptionally valuable as a trigger for dialogue around
issues of race, identity, culture and reconciliation.
Synopsis
Narrated by Peter Coyote and Tantoo Cardinal, In the
Light of Reverence is a 72-minute documentary on Native American
struggles to protect landscapes of spiritual significance. The film
tells the stories of three communities and places they care for: the
Lakota at Devils Tower in Wyoming, the Hopi in the Four Corners area of
the Southwest, and the Wintu at Mt. Shasta in California. The film
documents obstacles to religious freedom for land-based practitioners,
and impacts on sacred sites that range from mining and ski resorts to
New Age practices and rock-climbing.
Free Discussion Guide Offer
TRI will offer a discussion guide to accompany the
broadcast. Available the second week of July, it will include questions,
quotes and action steps to help any community leader, teacher or

Reverence. Additionally, it will contain questions specifically designed
for use in faith-based community settings. To obtain a copy, please

More about the Television Race Initiative
The Television Race Initiative (TRI) is a multi-year
effort in which diverse, high-profile television broadcasts create a
framework for sustained community dialogue and problem solving around
the issue of race relations. In partnership with national and
community-based organizations and public television stations, TRI uses
storytelling - initially in the form of several public television
broadcasts -- to 'break the ice' and encourage conversations that lead
to constructive action.
