Governing body moderators to gather in Louisville

GA moderator Syngman Rhee hosts parley on "unity and diversity" with Jack Haberer as keynote speaker

by Jerry L. Van Marter, Presbyterian News Service

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - 1-May-2001 - Moderators from most of the 173 presbyteries and 16 synods will gather here next weekend for the annual moderators' conference, hosted each spring by the General Assembly moderator.

This year's moderator, the Rev. Syngman Rhee, has chosen the theme "Unity in the Midst of Diversity" as the theme for the April 27-29 gathering.

Keynote speaker is well-known evangelical the Rev. Jack Haberer, who will review his new book, God Views, The Convictions that Drive us and Divide Us. Haberer is pastor of Clear Lake Presbyterian Church in Houston and former president of the Presbyterian Coalition, an organization of conservative individuals and groups within the PC(USA).

Moderators will visit program staff at the Presbyterian Center the afternoon of April 27 and have an opportunity to walk a labyrinth in the center's chapel. Worship services will be led by Rhee and General Assembly stated clerk the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick..

Workshops include issues before the General Assembly, the nuts and bolts of being a moderator and what presbyteries are doing with the theme of "Unity in the Midst of Diversity" in response to a request by the 1999 General Assembly.
