Responding on "Jesus is
Lord" |
| Let's find better titles to affirm our
faith
[12-5-01]
An elder agrees with Barbara
Kellam-Scott in questioning the continuing insistence on affirming
that "Jesus is Lord."
Warren Aney, elder and member of First Presbyterian Church, Portland,
Oregon, writes:
I was pleased to see your statement that "'Jesus
is Lord'...is much too abstract for me." (as quoted in The
Layman, an interesting place to find someone who voices the same
thoughts I have).
I too have considered the fact that a contemporary
"lord" is just some privileged British sub-aristocrat to whom
we certainly don't owe any deference. I wish we had a title for Jesus or
God more akin to the German Herr or the Scandinavian herrn,
which has come to mean just mister or sir with neither aristocratic or
exclusively religious connotations. The word "lord" is
religious-speak that places too much distance between me and my God. It
would be even better if we could come up with a familiar non-sexual
title for God -- let me know if you have any.
