National Council of Churches |
National Council of Churches may seek a
much wider coalition, with an initial focus on poverty

A New York Times story by Gustav Niebuhr
reports that the National Council of Churches, which includes 35
Protestant and Eastern Orthodox churches, is considering an invitation
to bring together Catholic, evangelical Protestant, and Pentecostal
groups in a much broader gathering of churches.
According to the Rev. Robert W. Edgar, the general
secretary of the NCC, one possible way to seek some common ground among
these very diverse bodies might be a focus on a single issue -- perhaps
a decade-long commitment to fight poverty. The NCC is still struggling
with financial problems, but had balanced its books for the first half
of 2000, and expects to do so for the current half. That has come at the
expense of a reduction in staff by about 30 people, leaving a total
staff of about 70.
