The National Network of Presbyterian College Women is Now Accepting Applications for its Coordinating Committee

The work of the National Network of Presbyterian College Women is guided by a coordinating committee (CoCo) of twelve college women from around the country. Each year, four new CoCo members are selected for a three-year term as four members complete their tenure and rotate off the committee. New members must be enrolled as undergraduate students, be willing to serve a three-year term, be willing to attend a four-day meeting twice a year (once each semester) and be willing to engage in NNPCW activities between meetings.

Interested individuals are requested to fill our an application online (http://www.pcusa.org/nnpcw/aboutus/application.htm). Selection is based on, though not limited to, the following criteria: geographic representation; racial-ethnic diversity; size and type of college/university represented. Students from other denominations may apply.

Applications will be accepted for the next year's team members until August 15.

NNPCW's approach to leadership attracts notice of women's-rights group

International forum will study Presbyterians' way of sharing 'womanspace'

by Mary Julia Pace, PC(USA) Office of Communication

LOUISVILLE - Oct. 21, 2005 – The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) has selected for publication a case study of an innovative model for shared leadership developed by the National Network of Presbyterian College Women (NNPCW).

"Empowering Womanspace: Power Distribution and Dynamics in Christian Feminist Community" was written by Kelsey Rice, associate for NNPCW, and Ann Crews Melton, former interim associate for Women's Advocacy in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

The study explores the unique power-sharing structure of NNPCW and its ways of creating an organization that nurtures young women's spiritual development in a Christian community that is inclusive and non-hierarchical.

"We're pleased to be able to share this consensus model for shared leadership," Rice said. "NNPCW is committed to creating a safe environment where college women can explore what it means to claim a Christian faith that empowers women."

The paper was one of 29 chosen from a group of 144 submitted from 42 countries for presentation at AWID's International Forum Oct. 27-30 in Bangkok, Thailand.

Rice will attend as a guest of AWID. Melton also plans to attend. NNPCW will receive a $1,000 honorarium as part of the award. The PCUSA is an institutional member of AWID.

NNPCW is a PC(USA) ministry with about 500 members across the country. Its inclusive leadership structure ensures that decisions are made by the people most affected - NNPCW members.

"I'm so hopeful about this new generation of church leaders," said Mary Elva Smith, the denomination's associate director for Women's Ministries. "These young women are truly following the prophetic example of Jesus Christ in a transforming way. To be asked to share that in the secular world is a wonderful witness."

More information about the NNPCW is available at its Web site: www.pcusa.org/nnpcw.
The National Network of College Women (NNPCW) presents the Tenth Annual Leadership Event

August 7-11, 2002
Nashville, Tenn.

[5-16-02]

NNPCW is planning a four-day conference of dialogue, worship and community interaction with a focus on women, science and Christian faith.

In exploring women, science and Christian faith, leadership event participants will take part in plenary sessions and workshops focused around three main areas:

Science and Women (including such topics as women's health, discrimination against women in science, social constructs of gender, and vocation/calling as a part of life pursuit)

Faith and Women (examining inclusive language, historical debates around women in the church, and contemporary women's theological work)

Faith and Science (tackling such topics as scientific ethics, evolution, reproductive choice, theological approach to science, and what is unique about Christianity as it relates with science)

You'll find details on the NNPCW web site.

GA actions ratified (or not) by  the presbyteries

A number of the most important actions of the 219th General Assembly have now been acted upon by the presbyteries, confirming most of them as amendments to the PC(USA) Book of Order.

We provided resources to help inform the reflection and debate, along with updates on the voting.

Our three areas of primary interest have been:

bullet Amendment 10-A, which  removes the current ban on lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender persons being considered as possible candidates for ordination as elder or ministers.  Approved!

bullet Amendment 10-2, which would add the Belhar Confession to our Book of Confessions.  Disapproved, because as an amendment to the Book of Confessions it needed a 2/3 vote, and did not receive that.

bullet Amendment 10-1, which  adopts the new Form of Government that was approved by the Assembly.   Approved.
