Tampa Bay chapter of Witherspoon |
| This very busy chapter of the Witherspoon
Society has produced an interesting new brochure for potential members.
Here's the text, and below that you can get a glimpse
of the outside panels of the brochure.
[2-4-02]
The Tampa Bay
Chapter of the
Witherspoon
Society
invites you
to follow
a noble
Presbyterian
tradition ...
 | Justice |
 | Diversity |
 | Peace |
 | Environment |
 | Population |
 | Farm Workers |
 | Inclusiveness |
 | Third World Issues |
The Reverend John Witherspoon, first Moderator of the
General Assembly and the only minister to sign the Declaration of
Independence, did not view the Church as cloistered. He believed the
Church should be engaged in society's issues and struggles.
The Witherspoon Society, named for him, continues to
emphasize this aspect of Christian responsibility. With John
Witherspoon, we believe that our faith should be lived out in society,
that God alone is Lord of the conscience, and that "Truth is in
order to Goodness."
The Tampa Bay Chapter invites you to become a part of
its efforts to keep our denomination and our Presbytery relevant to
today's issues. We meet monthly to share positive steps that can be
taken by individuals and to coordinate group actions that deal with
problems such as violence, diversity, global poverty, the environment,
inclusiveness, farm worker rights and other justice issues.
More information about Witherspoon can be found at
their website: www.witherspoonsociety.org
According to a declaration of our General Assembly,
our faith requires us to:
 | help each other become conscious of and understand
the nature of the context in which we live; |
 | work together to create social structures and
institutions which will sustain life in the world in ways that
accord with God's will; |
 | criticize and resist all those powers and patterns
(both within the church and in the world) that destroy human beings,
corrode human community and injure God's creation. |
These we engage in over and over again in order to be the church and to
fulfill God's call to us.
The national Witherspoon Society and the Tampa Bay Chapter endeavor to
press upon our denomination and the Tampa Bay Presbytery these aspects
of our Christian responsibility.
We invite and urge you to join us!
The Tampa Bay Chapter of the Witherspoon Society usually meets on the
third Saturday of each month from 10:00 to 12 noon. The meetings are
open to all and we encourage any who have an interest in justice issues
to attend.
For more information about the group, or to determine
the location of our next meeting, call (727) 733-5591 in Pinellas or
(813) 914-8641. You may also send an email request for info to spiderman@ozline.net
Through our witness we seek to revitalize the church's
life and focus, so that it may be biblically and confessionally faithful
in the world.

students, exiles, missionaries, workers, thinkers, artists, lovers
and devotees, from many parts of the world, all children of the God
in whose image women are made. .... This blog seeks to glorify God
through prayer, work, art, and intellectual reflection. Through
