A visitor appreciates the views of Dirk Ficca

[6-13-01]

I was motivated to search for Mr. Ficca's speech after reading an article in our local paper, The Orlando Sentinel, on June 9, 2001, entitled, "Sharp thorns prick at Presbyterians." The article began with his rhetorical question: "So, what's the big deal about Jesus?" The article went on to discuss the upcoming General Assembly in Louisville and the controversies that are expected to be aired this week. It also had quotes and reactions from my former pastor, Howard Edington. He is former because I left the church after serious disagreements with him. I figured that if he had a problem with it that I'd probably like it. And I did.

I found his speech to be very interesting and thought-provoking. I wondered if his question had been taken out of context. It certainly was. I wish Presbyterians and other Christian groups could spend time reading and discussing worthwhile ideas like the ones he presented so well in his talk. I think it would help us be more thoughtful and loving in our Christian walks. I find it puzzling why certain groups would feel compelled to silence this kind of exchange within our denomination. I personally find it refreshing and challenging. So, maybe a positive side effect of the effort to combat his ideas is that it highlighted and spread the issue, and unsuspecting folks like me learn about it and get curious enough to get informed.

Please tell Mr. Ficca that the word is out in Orlando, FL and that I appreciate his good work.

Sincerely,

Dan Meadors
