Gay or straight, we're all part of
one community |
| Maybe we can learn:
We're all part of one community
[9-20-01]
Attorney Doug Nave, an active Presbyterian, has sent this thought
about the terror of September 9
The terrorist attacks last week remind us that we are
all part of one community. To single out a few is by no means intended
to diminish or overlook the many, many others involved in this tragedy.
Nevertheless, I appreciated learning today about several openly gay men
who were caught up in last Tuesday's events, and pass that information
along in case you might appreciate knowing too:
 | Rev. Michael Judge, the Catholic Chaplain of the
New York City Fire Department, was killed by flying debris at the
WTC when he removed his helmet to minister to the injured. |
 | Mark Bingham, a public relations executive, placed
one of the cellphone calls from the Newark-San Francisco flight that
crashed in Pennsylvania, and is believed to have played a part in
wresting control of the plane from the terrorists so it did not
strike its target. |
 | David Charlebois, co-pilot of the American Airlines
plane that crashed into the Pentagon, leaves a partner of 14 years
and a legacy of activism in helping transform a plagued part of
Washington D.C. into a solid community. |
While some charge that "gay activists" bear
some of the responsibility for these attacks, it is nice to recognize
the real activism of these individuals in trying to alleviate suffering
and make the world around them better.
