I've read all the analyses (I think)
and found them very thorough. The only thing I might add is this. From
what I heard at Mission Presbytery and have read and heard about from
other presbyteries, the most powerful arguments against O were made by
pastors and elders who had gay family members and were willing to talk
about the effects of the proposed amendment on genuine, flesh-and-blood
people. With their testimonies, the debate left the logical and
legislative analysis and became real.
What I hope we will learn from this is
that sessions and pastors supporting O should not now rush to condemn
the blessing of same-sex unions until they are faced with the Christian
brothers and sisters actually involved. Otherwise, they are going to
bring on themselves some very painful moments when they have to choose
between hurting a faithful member or members of the congregation and
enforcing a highly questionable resolution.
I'll be watching the remaining votes. I'm
sure many presbyteries will take no action but I hope most of them will
go ahead and express themselves.
Also, a nice comment that we just
have to share:
Doug: Thanks for all of your good reporting, nearly
every day, on the stuff going on around Amendment O, etc. Yours is the
best of sources and one of the most "forwarded" and copied
that I have used. Thanks again.
Shalom, Gordon Ringenberg |
