to the Terror of September 11 |
A Statement of Confession and
Affirmation from the Witherspoon Society in Response to the Terror of
September 11
At its meeting in Albuquerque on September 21, 2001,
the Executive Committee of the Witherspoon Society adopted this brief
statement in response to the terrible attack of September 11.
As we gather to consider the state of our Presbyterian
Church, and to seek ways to further the peace of this part of the Body
of Christ, we are nearly overwhelmed by grief over the immense losses of
ten days ago.
We grieve with the many who suffered trauma of body and
spirit, and the many more who have lost loved ones.
We confess our outrage at the harm that has been done
to innocent people, and at the painful consequences that will affect all
of us for months and years to come.
We confess our fears for the future, for the safety of
those we love, and for the people of the world.
We confess our fears for our nation, as it will be
sorely tempted to respond to violence with greater violence and so to
fulfill the hopes of the terrorists.
We are thankful for the compassion of our people, for
the courage of the rescuers and the resiliency of our nation as a whole.
We pray that these strengths will not be diverted to vindictive ends,
but will be used to overcome divisions and to seek the welfare of the
whole human family.
We are thankful for the sympathy and support of many
other nations and peoples, and we pray that our leaders will pursue
paths of cooperation and mutuality rather than domination, as they seek
an end to the threats of terrorism.
We pray that our people and our leaders may be
strengthened in mind and spirit so we may not be overcome by the evils
we deplore.
We are committed to the prophetic call for justice
that frees people from the resentment that fuels violence, and to the
Gospel vision of love that transforms hatred. |
