Call the Senate to support peace |
An urgent message
from the Presbyterian Office in Washington:Call senators to
support resolution for allowing the UN to do its work
[2-4-03]
On Jan. 29, Sens. Kennedy (MA) and Byrd
(WV) introduced S. Res. 32 calling on the President to support the UN
inspectors ongoing work and allow the inspectors more time to complete their
mission. The resolution also requires the President to come back to Congress
for a vote before proceeding with the war in Iraq. Kennedy's office has
asked the churches for support in getting grassroots messages to congress.
ACTION: There is not much time. Please
call, email, or fax your senators today. Urge them to support S. Res. 32.
Urge them to support bringing the resolution to the floor for a vote. Let
them know that you oppose rushing to war with Iraq. Iraq does not pose an
imminent threat to the U.S. or its neighbors, and it can be safely and
effectively disarmed through the UN without war. The U.S. should not attack
another country preemptively, and certainly not without a full congressional
debate and formal declaration of war.
You can reach you members of Congress by
calling the Capitol switchboard switchboard at 202-224-3121.
Sample letter: Please support S.
Res. 32, introduced by Senators Kennedy and Byrd, which calls upon the
President to give the UN weapons inspectors more time to safely disarm
Iraq without war and to come back to Congress for a vote before proceeding
with the war in Iraq.
I do not think the U.S. should rush to
war with Iraq particularly without the support of our allies. Iraq does
not pose an imminent threat to the U.S. or its neighbors, and it can be
safely and effectively disarmed through the UN without war. The U.S.
should not attack another country preemptively, and certainly not without
a full congressional debate and formal declaration of war.
